Logic Pro Audio to MIDI: Two Useful Methods
There are two sensible ways to handle Logic Pro audio to MIDI. Flex Pitch is already inside Logic and works well for a clear single-note performance. An external polyphonic model is often a better first pass for piano, guitar chords, or another part with overlapping notes. Neither method produces a finished arrangement every time. Both can save a lot of note entry when the source is chosen carefully.
Before pressing anything, listen for whether the recording holds one pitch at a time or lets several notes overlap. That tells you which route is likely to waste less time.
Method 1: create MIDI with Flex Pitch
Apple’s current Logic Pro guide gives the built-in sequence:
- Double-click the audio region to open it in the Audio Track Editor.
- Turn on Flex for the track.
- Choose Flex Pitch from the Flex Mode menu.
- Select the audio you want to convert.
- Choose Edit > Create MIDI Track from Flex Pitch Data.
- Pick a software-instrument patch on the new track.
Logic creates a MIDI region below the source. Keep the audio track audible at first so you can compare pitches and timing. Correct wrong notes, edit velocity, and quantize only as much as the part needs.

What Flex Pitch handles well

Flex Pitch becomes less predictable when notes overlap. In the Reddit thread about the greyed-out command, the source contained both melody and piano chords, and enabling the feature did not make the polyphonic material clean. If you have stems, convert the simplest one. If you only have a full mix, separate the piano, vocal, bass, or guitar first. A quiet solo stem usually saves more time than any later setting change.
Method 2: use a polyphonic model, then import
For chords or a part where several pitches ring together, try a separate transcription pass:
- Bounce or export the isolated region from Logic as WAV or another common audio format.
- Open the audio to MIDI converter. Processing happens locally in the browser, so the recording is not uploaded.
- Add the file and inspect the piano-roll preview.
- Adjust note confidence or minimum note length if the preview is cluttered.
- Download the
.midfile and drag it back into the Logic project. - Match the region start and project tempo, then assign an instrument.
The converter uses Spotify’s Basic Pitch, which supports polyphonic input and pitch bends. Its own documentation says it works best on one instrument at a time. A bounced piano stem is a good candidate; an entire mastered song is not.

What Logic users report in real projects

An X user describing the built-in Flex Pitch route had the same complaint. Logic could analyze a take and create a MIDI region, but the notes still demanded human attention. The command worked; the frustration came from what remained afterward.
The gap between those reports mostly comes down to the source material. Playing style, tone, and arrangement density can change the result more than the product name. A clean picked guitar part and a distorted guitar wall are both “guitar,” but they are very different transcription inputs.
Use a quick test region before committing to a full song. Eight clean bars will tell you whether Flex Pitch or a polyphonic pass is the better route.
Clean up in the right order
First, remove obvious detections that sit outside the instrument’s range. A bass line should not have random notes several octaves above it. A piano chord should not contain a cluster of tiny notes between every attack.
Second, correct pitch and octave errors while listening to the source. Do this before quantization; otherwise you can make the wrong notes look tidy and lose track of the musical problem.
Third, edit note lengths. Conversion often leaves overlaps where the original audio had sustain or reverb. Decide whether you want the sound of the performance or a clean part for a new instrument.
Finally, handle timing and velocity. Apply light quantization or use a strength setting instead of snapping every note to the grid. Audio-derived velocity is an estimate, so shape it for the instrument you chose rather than treating it as ground truth.
If it goes wrong
If the Create MIDI command is missing, confirm that the region is selected in the Audio Track Editor and that Flex Pitch, not Flex Tempo, is active.
When chords collapse or lose inner notes, export an isolated stem and try the polyphonic method. Be ready to add a missing chord tone by ear.
For too many short notes, raise minimum note length or note confidence during the external pass. In Logic, remove tiny regions of MIDI before doing detailed velocity work.
If the MIDI drifts away from the audio, make sure the bounced region begins on a known bar and that the project tempo matches. A freely played source may require a tempo map.
Sometimes the notes are correct but the part still sounds wrong. Change the software instrument and its envelope. A conversion from a sustained guitar or vocal can sound awkward on a short piano patch even when the pitches are accurate.
Which method should you choose?
Start with Flex Pitch for one-note-at-a-time audio because it keeps the entire job inside Logic. For a chordal but isolated instrument, a polyphonic browser pass can preserve more simultaneous notes. For a dense mix, split stems or transcribe the essential line by ear.
Logic Pro audio to MIDI works best as a head start, not an automatic final performance. Choose the method based on the source, test a short region, and keep the original audio beside the MIDI until the edit is convincing.
