Use the original MIDI before a Piano to MIDI converter
A digital piano may already be able to record MIDI through USB, Bluetooth, or its internal sequencer. Use that file if you have it. It contains the exact keys, timing, velocity, and pedal messages captured by the instrument. Audio transcription is for recordings where the original MIDI was never saved or is no longer available.
An acoustic piano recording has no embedded note list. The converter has to infer pitches and timing from the sound. That makes the result editable, but it cannot recreate the performer’s exact key velocity, fingering, or pedal movement. Think of the MIDI as a draft of the performance rather than a backup of the original session.
Record piano audio for the Piano to MIDI converter
A direct output from a digital piano is the cleanest audio source. Turn off backing rhythms and record only the piano voice. For an acoustic piano, place the microphone where both registers are balanced and avoid clipping on loud chords. Close windows, silence phone alerts, and keep other instruments out of the take.
Reverb and sustain pedal deserve attention. Natural room sound is fine, but long reverb makes notes overlap after the keys have been released. Heavy sustain can turn several chord changes into one continuous wash. If the performance is difficult to read, make a drier export or record a short passage with less pedal and compare the MIDI.
- Use WAV or a high-quality M4A when you control the export.
- Leave a brief clean gap before the first note instead of handling the microphone.
- Test a passage containing both hands and a few sustained chords.
- Avoid normalizing a clipped recording; clipping cannot be repaired by making it quieter.

Check whether the bass movement, top melody, and main chord changes are present. Do not start by counting every note. A good first pass usually has the shape of the performance and a manageable number of mistakes. Isolated notes far above or below the played range are easy to remove later.
Repeated notes are a useful diagnostic. If two strikes have merged into one long block, raise Onset confidence slightly so the second attack is easier to detect. If one sustained note has broken into several short notes, lower the onset threshold or increase Min note length. Change one setting, then run the same excerpt again.
Choose Raw MIDI or Piano to MIDI converter cleanup
Raw MIDI keeps the full model output and is the right place to start when the inner voices matter. The Piano cleanup mode removes near-duplicate notes while preserving chords. Natural makes fewer changes. Clean is a balanced pass. Strict Grid can help with a tightly played pop or electronic part, but it may make rubato, swing, or a classical performance feel mechanical.
Listen to the original audio, Raw MIDI, and Cleaned MIDI before downloading. A sparse result is not always better. If cleanup removes a quiet chord tone that matters, keep Raw MIDI and edit it manually. Melody and Bass modes intentionally throw away other voices, so use them only when you want a separate top line or left-hand foundation.
Repair chords, pedal, and timing in a DAW
Place the audio and MIDI at the same start point. Work through short sections and remove false notes before moving anything onto the grid. Check octaves in the left hand, then listen to the inner notes of each chord. Harmonics can create extra upper notes, while a quiet middle voice may be missed completely.
MIDI note length does not reproduce a sustain pedal by itself. Extend notes that should ring, or add pedal controller data in the DAW after the pitches are correct. Quantize lightly and listen again. A human piano take often lands around the beat, and that movement can be part of the performance rather than an error.
Turn the MIDI into readable notation
Notation software can open the downloaded .mid file, but automatic engraving is a separate step. Set the correct tempo and time signature, split the music between treble and bass staves, and choose sensible note values. Overlapping notes and loose timing can produce too many ties or rests until they are cleaned up.
For a lead sheet, keep the melody and chord tones that explain the harmony instead of preserving every detected resonance. For a faithful transcription, compare every measure with the recording. The converter reduces note entry, while the final score still needs musical decisions about spelling, voices, dynamics, and pedal marks.
